Birch Flooring is milled from yellow and black birch. Birch is a light wood which is close grained and has a uniform texture. It can be purchased in a number of ways. You can choose to purchase birch that is primarily sapwood, which would give you a “light” color; or, heartwood, which would give you a red color; or you could purchase a combination of both sapwood and heartwood. You can purchase birch flooring in one of two grades-Select and Rustic.
Hard Maple Flooring is what we see in the old factory buildings in New England. It was chosen for its durability. Hard Maple flooring has a nice warmth to it; the wood is dense, and you will find just a hint of ring
growths in your lumber.
Specialty Hardwoods available include Curly Maple, Birds Eye Maple, Butternut, Mahogany, and Walnut. *** Call for availability ***
Norway Pine is a cousin to the southern pines. It is a harder wood than our native white pine; with the knots in Norway Pine being darker red and more pronounced. Norway Pine ranges in finish widths from 5” to 11”.
Eastern White Pine is milled two different ways. The first is what we all know as wide pine flooring. The lumber is milled 13” and wider; the wood is sound and has tight knots.
The second way it is milled creates a more narrow width. The width face is 5 ½”, and it is referred to as 2x6 pine decking. If you wanted your flooring on the second floor to create the ceiling for the first floor, you could use this grade. It is also used for cathedral ceilings, and is frequently used in log home construction as well as post and beam construction. Eastern White Pine, though softer and less dense than Norway Pine, has been used for flooring in New England for over 200 years.
Eastern White Pine is available in the following widths and grades:
D-Select is a predominantly clear grade having finish widths from 4” through 11”.
Premium is known as a knotty grade having finished widths from 4” through 11”.
Wide Pine is also a knotty grade and has finished widths of 12” through 17”.
