NATIVE HARDWOOD FLOORING

The northeast is known for the quality and variety of its hardwoods.  In order to provide our customers with a previewing of the wood floors offered, we have a complete display in our retail building.  In addition to the listed hardwood and softwood flooring options, we offer custom stair treads, stair landings and handrails.

Northern Red Oak Flooring (Quercus Rubra) is the predominant hardwood species in New Hampshire.  As a matter of fact, New Hampshire probably has the largest percentage of true red oak than any other area in the United States.  Northern Red Oak is known for its clarity of color, denseness, consistency of color and grain, and its beauty.  It is a highly sought after wood, and is used for flooring, stair treads, stair parts, and furniture.

Rustic Red Oak Flooring and Rustic White Oak Flooring get their “rustic” description due to the fact that there are more characteristics evident in the wood than the Northern Red Oak.

New England Forest Products - hickory flooring, cordwood, flooring, birch flooring, hard maple flooring, northern red oak, firewood for sale, lumber, mill direct, and more

These characteristics include knots, bird pecks, blackened and charred wood from an old fire, nails left in the tree, or old barbed wire…all things that the tree has weathered and grown in spite of. These characteristics tell their own story!

Rustic Red Oak is a bit more pinkish orange in color than Rustic White Oak, which can be viewed as more greenish-yellow in color.

Hickory Flooring has growth rings that are less pronounced than in oak or ash.  The wood is dense with wide variations between the sapwood and the heartwood.  The heartwood is on the “chocolate” side, while the sapwood is cream colored.  Hickory flooring comes in two grades-Select and Rustic.

Cherry Flooring will start out pale red in color.  Exposure to air will cause it to darken and become a rich red.   It has a beautiful and distinctive grain to it and is known as “semi-ring diffused”. This means it shows some growth rings, but they are not as pronounced as oak or ash.  Cherry flooring comes in two grades-Select and Rustic.

Birch Flooring is milled from yellow and black birch.  Birch is a light wood which is close grained and has a uniform texture.  It can be purchased in a number of ways.  You can choose to purchase birch that is primarily sapwood, which would give you a “light” color; or, heartwood, which would give you a red color; or you could purchase a combination of both sapwood and heartwood.  You can purchase birch flooring in one of two grades-Select and Rustic.

Hard Maple Flooring is what we see in the old factory buildings in New England.  It was chosen for its durability.  Hard Maple flooring has a nice warmth to it; the wood is dense, and you will find just a hint of ring growths in your lumber.

Specialty Hardwoods available include Curly Maple, Birds Eye Maple, Butternut, Mahogany, and Walnut. *** Call for availability ***

NATIVE PINE FLOORING

Norway Pine is a cousin to the southern pines. It is a harder wood than our native white pine; with the knots in Norway Pine being darker red and more pronounced. Norway Pine ranges in finish widths from 5” to 11”.

Eastern White Pine is milled two different ways. The first is what we all know as wide pine flooring. The lumber is milled 13” and wider; the wood is sound and has tight knots.

The second way it is milled creates a more narrow width. The width face is 5 ½”, and it is referred to as 2x6 pine decking. If you wanted your flooring on the second floor to create the ceiling for the first floor, you could use this grade. It is also used for cathedral ceilings, and is frequently used in log home construction as well as post and beam construction. Eastern White Pine, though softer and less dense than Norway Pine, has been used for flooring in New England for over 200 years.

Eastern White Pine is available in the following widths and grades:

D-Select is a predominantly clear grade having finish widths from 4” through 11”.
Premium is known as a knotty grade having finished widths from 4” through 11”.
Wide Pine is also a knotty grade and has finished widths of 12” through 17”.
