New England
NEFP is located in Greenfield, N.H. It was established in 1993 as a hardwood manufacturing facility, manufacturing native hardwood lumber. In addition to the manufacture of lumber, Dave Buxton, the owner, is a New Hampshire Licensed Professional Forester. |

He has been working with landowners since 1973, first as a county forester with the Hillsboro Extension Service, and then as a private forester, to help them implement management plans for their woodlots. This is a service NEFP continues to provide, as it supports their commitment to sustainable forestry practices.
They have come a long way since July of 1997, when a freak tornado whipped through the area, leaving the newly renovated mill in a state of rubble. The mill was up and running again in six weeks. The employees never lost a day of work and their customers and suppliers never missed a beat.
In the summer of 2008, NEFP expanded. A 5000 square foot retail building was constructed on their site in Greenfield, N.H. They now offer a variety of native hardwood and softwood lumber products to the local community.
When the market changes, a business owner has two choices. The first is to remain the same and hope for the best; and the second choice is to reinvent yourself. New England Forest Products chose to reinvent themselves by expanding into the lumber retail market, something Buxton has wanted to do for years.
The business in 2009 is evolving from the business it was in 1993. With the expansion of the retail business, New England Forest Products now offers finished and rough native lumber-hardwood and softwood, at prices reflecting the “mill direct” nature of the product. And the good news is that the quality of the lumber is excellent.
From the beginning stages of working with landowners to implement a management plan for their woodlot, to the sustainable harvesting of the timber, to the manufacturing of the lumber; and now to the retail end of the lumber business, this is a tightly run operation.
In the retail store, customers will find a full line of high quality hardwoods (northern red oak, hickory, maple, birch) and softwood. New England Forest Products carries flooring, stair parts, standard patterns of white pine (V-match, shiplap, paneling), cabinet grade hardwoods, dimension lumber, softwood planking and timbers; as well as various additional sorts of retail lumber. They also do custom sawing. All of the lumber is native to this region and has been sustainable harvested.

The lumber industry was a “green” business before being “green” was recognized as being extremely important to our environment. There is not one part of the tree that goes unused. The sawdust is sold to wood pellet companies and made into wood pellets, the wood chips are sold to power plants, the bark becomes that beautiful dark bark mulch used to announce the end of winter! What doesn’t end up as lumber, pellets, or fuel for power plants, or bark mulch, is used for cordwood. There is virtually no waste here. Because these lumber products are sold on site, the prices reflect the mill direct nature of the lumber. The combination of the excellent quality of the lumber and the mill direct pricing makes this a worthwhile place to visit. It is no surprise that New England Forest Products was awarded the 2007 award for Forest Industry of the Year by New Hampshire Timberland Association.
